According to foreign media reports, a food poisoning incident occurred at the factory of Apple supplier Foxconn in India last week, and dozens of workers and their relatives who participated in the protest were detained. The local police confirmed that all these people have been released. It is reported that in Chennai, the southern city of Tamil Nadu, the highway has been blocked for several hours. This is where Apple’s foundry manufacturer Foxconn started assembling the iPhone 12 this year.

It is unclear whether the protests triggered by the food poisoning incident disrupted production, which resulted in 150 employees being admitted to hospital for treatment.

Foxconn declined to comment on this. Apple did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. A local police officer said that these workers and their relatives participated in the blockade of the highway connecting Chennai and Bangalore, the Indian technology center.

The police officer also added that although nearly 70 women detained for the protests were released the next day, some of the 22 men detained were still in custody, but all of them have now been released. Most of Foxconn’s workers in India are women.

This is not the first time riots have occurred in the Indian factory of Apple’s supplier. In December last year, another Apple supplier, Wistron, caused a riot in a factory that allegedly owed the wages of thousands of contract workers. Workers destroyed many equipment and vehicles, and the damage caused was estimated at 60 million U.S. dollars.
