The government is working on one or more measures that aim to pay in installments and reduce energy bills for families and businesses. This is what we learn from sources in Palazzo Chigi. At the same time, the executive is studying a measure involving the reduction of gasoline and diesel prices after the exponential increases in recent weeks mainly due to the war in Ukraine and sanctions against Moscow. The new measures could be taken as early as next week. The timing is tight, but there are “one or more measures” in the pipeline, the sources confirm.
Specifically, the possibility of using the extra VAT revenue on fuels in recent months and of intervening on the extra-profits of companies in some of the sectors concerned is being evaluated, while preserving “the stability of public finance”. In addition to implementing internal measures, “at the European level, the government will commit itself to further measures on the front of the energy crisis, in particular on the possibility of introducing a European ceiling on the prices of gas imports”.
