The green transformation of China’s shipbuilding industry is accelerating in an all-round way, according to the China Shipbuilding Industry Association. In 2023, the country’s shipbuilding completions, new orders, and orders on hand are expected to increase across the board, further solidifying its status as a major shipbuilding country.

The association reported that China’s international share of new green power ship orders is projected to reach 57% in 2023, marking a significant achievement in the industry. This increase in green power ship orders will result in full coverage of mainstream ship types. Additionally, the world‘s largest 5,400-horsepower pure electric tugboat developed by China and the country’s first 500-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell-powered ship have been completed and put into use.

Furthermore, China has made significant strides in the research and development of new energy equipment for the shipbuilding industry. Batch orders for marine methanol fuel and ammonia fuel supply systems have been secured, and the first marine medium-speed and high-power ammonia fuel engine has been successfully ignited. These developments demonstrate the country’s commitment to green development in the shipbuilding industry.

Li Yanqing, secretary-general of the China Shipbuilding Industry Association, emphasized the importance of green transformation in the global shipbuilding industry. Yanqing stated that China’s shipbuilding industry is accelerating the promotion of product systems, manufacturing systems, and supply chain systems, providing strong support for promoting high-quality development and enhancing international competitiveness.

The green transformation of China’s shipbuilding industry is a positive step towards environmental sustainability and high-quality industry development. The industry’s commitment to green technologies and practices will likely have far-reaching impacts on the global shipbuilding sector.
