Trial: Tesla has to pay a fine of millions

The electric car manufacturer Tesla has to pay a fine of 1.5 million euros. The company was accused of violating environmental regulations. A settlement in a civil court in the US state of California now stipulates that a fine must be paid.

Tesla is said to have illegally dumped hazardous waste at its California auto repair shops, solar energy systems and a factory. “Electric vehicles play a role in improving the environment, but it is imperative to recognize that their production and maintenance creates harmful waste,” said San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas.

Tesla initially left an inquiry from the AP news agency unanswered. Prosecutors’ statement said Tesla cooperated with investigators and took measures to ensure compliance with the law. The company operates an estimated 57 auto repair shops and 18 solar energy systems in California. The vehicles are assembled in Fremont in the greater San Francisco area.
