Turin, Fiom focuses on Mirafiori. And the workers organize a guided tour

TURIN. The ascendancy of the large factory is still intense, capable of arousing a sort of dependence among the workers that makes detachment impossible. The march organized yesterday morning by Fiom CGIL workers along part of the perimeter of the Mirafiori district “to keep the factory in the spotlight” gave scenes similar to that of a procession for propitiatory purposes. At stake is the manufacturing future of the city, called to a profound reconfiguration of spaces and industrial organization to remain hooked to the electric transformation of mobility also announced by Stellantis. Immense, it has an extension of 450 football fields and alone occupies a large part of the territory of South Turin, the symbolic Italian automotive plant no longer grinds the numbers of the past. And the claim to return to getting closer to the production volumes of a world that no longer exists – in 1969 60,000 people worked in Mirafiori and a million cars were built – is naive.

At the local level the concept is clear to everyone, from the institutions to the historically most intransigent trade unions. «The car must remain central to the territory and not because we are nostalgic for the Turin of the Ferrigno century but because a new era is starting in the automotive sector. The realities that will be held hooked to this transformation will have the opportunity to grow and we want Turin to be a luxuriant, thriving city, where you work well »says the general secretary of Turin Fiom, Edi Lazzi. The goal of the workers’ pilgrimage around the factory – starting from door 5 of Corso Agnelli and ending at the Carrozzerie, will be repeated once a month until July – is to give strength to a plan to imagine how to transform the areas that are currently unused, «Perhaps convincing the company to establish the recycling, reuse and disposal process of batteries in Mirafiori» imagines Gianni Mannori, Fiom manager for Mirafiori. The signs are encouraging: recently Stellantis speaking of Turin’s opportunity “to take on the role of an international engineering competence center for electrification” also announced that he is exploring “new ideas in the field of the circular economy that will require further discussions to build projects together with the Region and the Municipality ». The last word is up to the company, the two entities have some good cards in their hands. “The intention is to develop, together with Stellantis, an urban planning that strengthens and facilitates the industrial development plan and the reuse of areas that are not currently used” explains, for example, the mayor Stefano Lo Russo.

Governor Alberto Cirio instead focuses on logistics to entice Stellantis: «The circular economy does not only mean recycling batteries, but also other parts of the car and that’s where logistics comes into play. The natural place, the intersection between Tav and Terzo Valico is our territory ». In the past, local institutions have moved on similar tracks, for example in 2006 when the line was installed that led to the transfer of the Grande Punto from Melfi to Mirafiori in exchange for the sale of some areas to local authorities. Then the model returned to be produced in Basilicata but the Corso Tazzoli line was still used to produce the Alfa Mito. «That operation – concludes Lazzi – gave breath to the plant and generated work. Even today the road must be that of public intervention “. –
