Zillow is shaking up the rental market with its latest offering – the ability to split costs with a roommate. This new variant allows renters to make a better balance when paying monthly rent and, of course, save more.
According to the prestigious real estate company, this new type of listing is particularly timely, as rents in the United States have increased almost 30% since the pandemic, and a surprising 50% of renters are now burdened by costs. They spend 30% or more of their income on rent and public services.
Now, Zillow users can include “room” listings in their searches along with traditional “entire place” options. These listings are intended for those seeking shared living spaces in an increasingly expensive market.
The option directly benefits tenants looking for roommates, a common scenario among Gen Z and millennial renters, who make up more than half of the U.S. rental market.
Recognizing the challenges renters face in finding a roommate, Zillow room listings simplify the process by facilitating connections between tenants and potential roommates.
Michael Sherman, vice president of Zillow Rentals, stated, “We know that finding the right place to call home is not a one-size-fits-all solution. By introducing room listings, we are creating a robust marketplace of options that truly reflects the diverse needs of renters.”
