Modern Metal / Progressive Metal

There are many metal bands in Austria that are only known to insiders and scene connoisseurs. Wrongly, because many of them deserve much more attention. The Lower Austrians from Chaos Inside belong to this category, it is not for nothing that the Soundmagnet team already has a clear recommendation in 2020 HERE pronounced for this combo.

The progressive Modern Metallers provide us The Raven, the Joker and the Machine at least new listening food. The label “modern” may make some readers groan, because “modern” is unfortunately all too often just a synonym for “heard it a thousand times” or “sucked out” – but not in this case, that much can be revealed in advance.

Rocking and sing-along

Chaos Inside go to work very rocky and sound very organic. Because where many bands only string together passages to get enough length for a song, the Lower Austrians create very skilfully smooth transitions and thus create a stringent listening experience.

Musically, they like to switch between melodic refrains and crisp guitar riffs, which are more or less subtly accompanied by the keyboard. Overall, pay attention Chaos Inside very careful that the melodies are given enough space, but in the vocal passages the instrumentation is scaled back a bit to bring out the vocal lines better.

The devil is in the details

the track GFCKYRSLF showcases this style of songwriting well. The number slowly builds up, alternating between crisp riffs and expansive vocal lines, with the earthy but precise drums and bass lines and enigmatic keyboard sounds steadily driving the song forward. You can prove it HERE hear.

Chaos Inside seem to have racked their brains not only about the internal song structures, but also about their order on the album. Because between rocking and mostly sing-along tracks, calmer, atmospheric moments like Banshee what is happening again and again and thereby catch the attention of the listener again.

This feeling for moods and the awakening of various emotions is ultimately what modern metal is about Chaos Inside stand out from the crowd. Of course, for some metal fans this will either be too melodic, too rocky or too soft. But if you don’t have any problems with melodies that are suitable for the radio or if you don’t automatically get pustules on your well-powdered ass with clear vocals and keyboard, then you’ll get on The Raven, the Joker and the Machine can discover something for themselves.

Conclusion
Chaos Inside prove with The Raven, the Joker and the Machine once again that they (should) be among the most exciting modern metal bands in Austria. The songs are on the one hand progressive, but on the other hand they are straightforward and always have a laid-back Rock’n’Roll attitude, so that they don’t get boring even after repeated listening, but stick in your head a little better with each listen. 8 / 10
