Diamondbacks score 14 times in 3rd inning; They crush the Rockies 16-1

PHOENIX (AP) — Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in five runs and had three hits, including a two-run homer, on a night when the Arizona Diamondbacks set a franchise record with 14 runs in the third inning to shake on Thursday 16-1 to the Colorado Rockies.

The 14 runs were the most scored in an inning of a season opener by any team since 1900.

Arizona, the defending National League champion, led 2-1 at the start of the bottom of the third inning. In that inning, he sent 18 batters to the plate and had 13 hits, in addition to walking two and raising a sacrifice fly.

Perhaps the strangest thing was that Arizona did not hit a single home run in the productive inning. The Dominican Ketel Marte, the Cuban Gurriel, Christian Walker, the Venezuelan Gabriel Moreno and the Puerto Rican Geraldo Perdomo hit two hits apiece.

Corbin Carroll walked a pair and Blaze Alexander had his first major league hit — a single that drove in the 14th run.

The victory went to Zac Gallen (1-0) and the defeat to Kyle Freeland (0-1).

For the Rockies, Venezuelans Elías Díaz 3-1. Dominican Elehuris Montero 3-0.

For the Diamondbacks, the Dominicans Marte 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI, Perdomo 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Cuban Gurriel is 3-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBIs. The Venezuelans Moreno 5-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs, Eugenio Suárez 4-2 with one run scored and two RBIs.
