So three song titles with the word “Hammer” in the title, that would even be HAMMERFALL too many. Since you can find the word “King” five times in different forms, then they are probably the men from HAMMER KING, who formed in 2015 around the former ROSS THE BOSS singer Titan Fox V. For the Germans, the signs are still pointing to a storm and so the men, who are more than established in the German scene with their self-titled third work, which was already released via Napalm Records, have arrived at their sixth album.
“König & Kaiser” is German heavy/power metal as it stands and is therefore often reminiscent of greats like MYSTIC PROHPECY, BRAINSTORM or ACCEPT. But a large true metal portion of the falling hammer, that of the men of war around Joey DeMaio or the majestic colleagues who unfortunately disbanded last year, should also be mentioned here.
HAMMER KING don’t take any risks, but instead focus on their strengths and on their latest work they once again deliver a skilful mix of stompers, bangers and anthems that encourage you to sing along, are equipped with skilful melodies and also the necessary amount of pathos don’t miss it. As a bonus, the title track, which is partly sung in German, features a successful guest performance from Tribun, also known as Georg Neuhauser from SERENITY and the WARKINGS. In addition to hammering drums, crisp riffs and the sometimes slightly scratchy vocals of Titan, who is also able to reach high regions, there are suitable choirs, some bombast and strong solos that are sometimes reminiscent of the twin guitar duels of HELLOWEEN or GAMMA RAY remember.
So the inclined heavy/power metal fan doesn’t get a revolution with “König Und Kaiser”, but it is definitely a more than successful genre work with everything that goes with it. With a fat sound from Charles Greywolf (POWERWOLF), who co-produced here with Titan, and Jacob Hansen, who took care of the mix, everything here is also in the top league and is made beautiful by the appropriate and pretty artwork by Péter Sallai rounded. For fans of the bands mentioned, definitely a discovery and probably a fixed date in the future, both live and with their releases.
