“Morabeza”: Tosca’s musical journey makes a stop in the theater

by admin

Singer, actress, music researcher: Tosca, as well as an interpreter of indisputable talent, represents a precious resource for the dissemination of musical culture in Italy. In addition to his records, this is demonstrated by his activity at the Officina Pasolini in Rome, the place where Tosca passionately combines the role of artist, teacher and producer. Tonight the Roman singer arrives at the Parenti Theater for the only Milanese stage of the tour linked to “Morabeza”, the 2019 album with which Tosca received two plates at the latest Tenco Award: best interpreter and best song for “I loved everything” , song presented at the Sanremo festival in 2020.

The concert will start from the songs of “Morabeza” but there will be much more. As is normal for an artist who in the last two years has not stopped: «The record is from 2019, in the middle there was a pandemic: a period of reflection, of new stimuli and awareness – Tosca says -. I understood a lot of things. That we often run and get tired for nothing, for example. A new approach to things and work was born. In these two years we have all changed ».

However, the two beacons of Tosca’s work remain consistency and freedom: “My way of understanding this profession has never changed since that Sanremo in 1996 (victory paired with Ron, ed), when I realized that the mechanisms and rhythms of the official discography were not for me. At that moment many did not understand my choice to abandon the easier path, but I know that what I did immediately after – for example a tour of Italy to sing sacred arias with musicians like Riccardo Tesi – gave me well-being, revealing that to me. that I would have liked to do in the future “. And that is that wonderful cross between Italian songwriting and popular music from the world, with a particular predilection for the Brazilian song.

«That for Brazil is a love that starts long ago, from the teenage years. I have always listened to the greats of Brazilian popular music and therefore the emotion I felt when I had the opportunity to play in Brazil is imaginable ». Reference to the 2015-2016 tour, when Tosca – one of the few Italians to have duet with a symbol of Brazilian song like Chico Buarque – brought her music to Algeria, Tunisia, Portugal, France and, in fact, to Brazil: “That travel and those concerts are the basis of the “Morabeza” project, a Creole word that indicates a vague feeling of nostalgia. And among the many encounters of that trip – Tosca recalls – I had the confirmation of how different the way of experiencing the music of Brazilian artists is: they do not know what stardom is, their availability is truly disarming ».

The differences with Italy? «In my opinion the world of Italian discography should eliminate the competition. But I realize I am asking too much since the challenge – as far as possible from the meaning of music – is at the heart of most of today’s television productions. On the contrary, I think that we cannot please everyone: what we write and sing must instead be the mirror of who we are ».

The last sentence seems to enclose the meaning of Tosca’s entire artistic career. That tonight at Parenti will remind the public of the artist she is: passing from the Italian adaptations of Brazilian classics (“Rosa” by Pixinguinha) and young Portuguese singer-songwriters (“Amar pelos dois” by Luisa Sobral which in Italian becomes “For every today that will come “) to the Roman song and the great Italian song. «Among the new surprises – reveals Tosca -, a version of another Pixinguinha masterpiece,“ Um a zero ”. And it is probable that a live album will be born from the repertoire of this theatrical tour ».

Tonight, to share the scene with Tosca, there will be the group of musicians who have accompanied her for years: Giovanna Famulari on cello and piano, Massimo De Lorenzi on guitar, Elisabetta Pasquale on double bass, Luca Scorziello on drums and Fabia Salvucci on percussion. All with the arrangements and direction of Joe Barbieri. The sets are by Alessandro Chiti, the direction is entrusted to Massimo Venturiello. But before going on stage, Tosca has a Milanese rite to honor: «When I come here I have to go for a walk at La Scala and Brera. Without anyone: just me and Milan ».
