Actor Daniel Lugo bids farewell to Puerto Rican theater but not to his career
After six decades in the industry, actor Daniel Lugo is set to bid farewell to the Puerto Rican stage with his final performance in the play “Aeroplanos”. At the age of 78, Lugo has decided to retire from the local scene due to logistical challenges, as he has not lived on the island for 30 years.
In an exclusive interview, Lugo expressed his views on retirement, stating that actors never plan to stop acting but rather let life take its course. He highlighted the challenges of performing in serious theater productions that require rehearsal and dedication, making it difficult for him to continue performing in Puerto Rico.
Having lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the past year, Lugo maintains a connection with the island through family, friends, and the press. He reflects on the changes he has seen in Puerto Rico’s infrastructure and the internal struggles faced by the population.
Throughout his career, Lugo has faced both satisfactions and dissatisfactions, appreciating the support of the Puerto Rican public while regretting that many of his works from other countries have not been recognized locally. He emphasized the need for Puerto Rican actors to explore opportunities abroad for artistic growth.
Lugo also shared anecdotes from his acting career, including a memorable experience on the set of the film “Envy” with Jack Black, who helped him overcome a language barrier during filming.
Despite bidding farewell to the Puerto Rican stage, Lugo remains passionate about his craft and intends to leave a lasting impact on future generations of actors. As he celebrates his 79th birthday next July, Lugo’s focus remains on the development of his children and leaving behind a legacy of dedication and passion for the arts.
