Li Xing’s real name is Li Zida, and his ancestral home is Wujin, Jiangsu. He was born in Shanghai in 1930 and came to Taiwan in 1948. Later he entered Taiwan Normal University (now Taiwan Normal University) to study. In 1958, he participated in the directing of “Wang Ge Liu Ge Tour Taiwan” and completed his directorial debut. In the 1960s, Li Xing pioneered the creation of healthy and realistic films in Taiwan. During his creative career, he has made 52 films. He has won the Golden Horse Award for Best Director with “Duck Raiser”, “Autumn Decision”, and “A Boat in the Ocean”, and 7 films won the Golden Horse Award for Best Director. The feature film also won the Golden Horse Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Li Xing is a pioneer and iconic figure in Taiwanese film. After the 1990s, he actively promoted cross-strait film exchanges. As early as 1990, he was invited by the Chinese Filmmakers Association to lead Taiwanese filmmakers to Beijing to participate in seminars. In 1991, he organized a delegation to the mainland to participate in the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Award, which was the first time that the Taiwanese film industry participated in a mainland film festival. In 1993, he was re-elected as Chairman of the Golden Horse Awards Executive Committee, which led the mainland film industry to formally organize a delegation to Taiwan to participate in the Golden Horse Awards.
In 2009, the Taiwan Cross-Strait Film Exchange Committee was established, and Li Xing was elected as the chairman. In the same year, the organization and the China Film Foundation jointly organized the first Cross-Strait Film Exhibition. Although he is in his old age and is inconvenient to move, Li Xing still pays for the film exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait all the year round, and has been respected by the film industry on both sides of the strait. There have been many Li Xing film exhibitions held in the mainland, and Li Xing has also donated his works to the China Film Archive on many occasions.
