“Captain Marvel 2” Actress Teyonah Parris Responds to Critical Reviews
Last year, “Captain Marvel 2” (The Marvels) faced harsh criticism and underperformed at the box office, becoming one of Marvel’s lowest-grossing films. Actress Teyonah Parris, who plays “Monica Rambeau” in the movie, believes that many reviews of the film were unjustified as people commented without actually watching it.
The 36-year-old Parris attributed the film’s lackluster performance to a combination of superhero fatigue in the industry and challenges stemming from the SAG-AFTRA strike, which prevented her from promoting the film in person. Despite a production budget of $220 million, “Captain Marvel 2” only managed to earn $206 million worldwide.
Critics on the film review website “Rotten Tomatoes” gave the movie a mixed reception, with only a 62% approval rating. Brie Larson, who portrays “Captain Marvel,” avoided discussing Marvel in a recent interview with “Extra.” However, Parris spoke openly about the film in an interview with “The Times” Weishi, urging viewers to watch the movie before forming opinions.
Expressing her disappointment with the premature criticisms of “Captain Marvel 2,” Parris emphasized the effort and creativity invested in making the movie. She encouraged audiences to give the film a fair chance, stating, “There’s a lot of people, a lot of time, effort, and talent went into making this movie.”
Parris acknowledged that not everyone may enjoy the film but emphasized the importance of forming authentic opinions after watching it. She appealed to viewers, saying, “If you don’t like the first 10 or 15 minutes, that’s okay…we make these movies to allow everyone to escape from the real world for a while and enjoy that moment of relaxation, joy, and fantasy.”
Reportedly, Marvel has shelved plans for sequels to “The Eternals,” “Captain Marvel,” and “Ant-Man” due to poor critical reviews and box office performance. Parris’s plea for a fair assessment of “Captain Marvel 2” echoes the sentiment of many in the industry who strive to create cinematic experiences that resonate with audiences.
As the debate surrounding the film continues, Parris remains hopeful that viewers will approach “Captain Marvel 2” with an open mind and draw their own conclusions. She concluded, “You don’t have to like a certain movie, but please give it a chance to actually watch it and draw your own opinions. If you do, that’s fair. That’s how you feel, and I can’t take that away from you.”
