Fan Chengda’s “Frost Sky Dawn·Plum”: the poet who knows plum blossoms best

In the Song Dynasty, renowned for its elegant literati culture, plum blossoms were a popular theme in poetry and art. Scholars like Lin Bu, Lu You, and Jiang Kui all expressed their admiration for plum blossoms through their works. However, it was Fan Chengda who took his love for plum blossoms to the next level.
Fan Chengda’s “Fancun Plum Blossom Book” is considered the first monograph on plum blossoms in China and the world. In this book, he meticulously recorded different varieties of plum blossoms from the southern regions of China, establishing the flower’s reputation as the most famous in the Southern Song Dynasty.
Over 170 of Fan Chengda’s more than 2,000 poems are dedicated to plum blossoms, showcasing his deep appreciation for their beauty. In his paintings, plum blossoms appear in various settings, creating stunning visual representations of their allure.
Fan Chengda’s dedication to plum blossoms was so great that he even composed a famous poem, “Frost Sky Dawn Corner,” praising their beauty in a cold and lonely setting.
