Advances in Heart Failure Care: The UMIPIC Program Showcases Success at XXVI Meeting of Spain’s Internal Medicine Society

The UMIPIC program, which focuses on providing comprehensive care to Complex Chronic Patients with Heart Failure, was the highlight of the XXVI Meeting of the Heart Failure and Atrial Fibrillation Group of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) held in Seville last week.

Launched in 2012, the UMIPIC program has shown significant benefits in reducing readmissions and mortality for patients with Heart Failure, especially those with preserved LVEF, Cardio-Renal Syndrome, and COPD. The program has garnered acceptance and implementation in 59 units across 12 autonomous communities.

Collaborating with the SEC, the UMIPIC program has conducted surveys to understand the management of Heart Failure in Spain, highlighting the changes in operation in Internal Medicine services that are part of the program. Additionally, the program has introduced an accreditation system through the SEMI EXCELLENT program to endorse good practices in the units.

The UMIPIC program has become a quality mark in the management of complex patients with Heart Failure, with a strong emphasis on research. To further enhance the quality of care provided, a strategic plan for the program has been developed for the 2024-2030 timeframe.

During the recent session, proposals for the strategic plan were presented, focusing on organization, research, training, and disclosure. A total of 89 professionals from 44 UMIPIC Units participated in the presentation and discussion of these initiatives.

The UMIPIC program continues to show its effectiveness in improving outcomes for patients with Heart Failure, solidifying its position as a leading management program in Spain.
