Cases of Eating Disorders Remain High in Piacenza, Says Mental Health Director
Doctor Massimo Rossetti, the Director of the Department of Mental Health and Pathological Addictions, has expressed concern over the high number of eating disorder cases in Piacenza, especially among the youth.
According to Dr. Rossetti, after the first lockdown, cases of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder had tripled in Piacenza. While the number has stabilized in the following years, it still remains very high. The Piacenza Local Health Authority is currently following around 200 people affected by eating disorders, with approximately 30 new cases and 30 remissions (total or partial recoveries) every year.
Anorexia nervosa remains the most common disorder, predominantly affecting women. Alarmingly, the age of onset of symptoms is decreasing, with cases even reported in primary school children as young as 9 or 10 years old.
Dr. Rossetti emphasized the importance of prevention, stating that families need to provide a healthy model of life where eating is a moment of socialization and communication, especially during the child’s early years. Moreover, he warned about the influence of social media and the internet on young people, urging families to be vigilant.
In addition, Dr. Rossetti expressed concern about potential budget cuts in 2024 that could impact the treatment of eating disorders. He highlighted the importance of specialized personnel in the treatment process, including professionals in internal medicine, pediatrics, psychonutrition, psychology, and psychiatry.
The director also emphasized the significance of semi-residential residences where patients can be closely monitored during meals as part of their treatment path.
Every year on March 15th, National Lilac Bow Day is celebrated, dedicated to raising awareness about eating disorders.
The Piacenza Local Health Authority is working to address the high prevalence of eating disorders in the region, but Dr. Rossetti stressed the need for continued support and resources to effectively treat and prevent these conditions.
