Heavy Rains Cause Water Infiltrations in Various School Facilities and Sports Centers in Reggio Emilia

February 28, 2024 – Reggio Emilia – The recent heavy rains in Reggio Emilia have caused water infiltrations in several school facilities and sports centers in the city, creating a challenging situation for technicians and officials.

The most complex situation was reported at the Guidetti gym, formerly known as Gil, located in via Verdi in the city. The gym, used by schools during the day and managed by the Arbor sports club in the afternoon, experienced water leakages due to clogged drains and gutters. Despite recent maintenance work on the roof and flooring, the heavy rains led to water seeping through the building. Similar issues were also reported in five different school facilities in the city, including Bergonzi, Pertini 2, Marco Polo, Manzoni, and Don Milani. The affected classrooms are temporarily unused, and there is no danger of ceilings or plaster falling.

In Guastalla, at the Russell Institute, a part of the false ceiling collapsed due to water damage caused by ongoing roof renovations. Small infiltrations were also reported in gyms in Correggio and Scaruffi, as well as at the Nobili school and the Cattaneo gym in Castelnovo Monti.

Sports facilities were not spared from the effects of the heavy rains, with the changing rooms and offices at the Caselli baseball stadium and the tennis courts in via Terrachini experiencing flooding. Roof coverings were replaced in some areas to prevent further water damage.

The Municipality and relevant authorities are working diligently to address the water infiltrations and ensure the safety of students, athletes, and staff in the affected facilities. Despite the challenges posed by the recent weather conditions, efforts are being made to mitigate the impact and prevent future incidents.
