If we are parents, it is normal to be constantly worried about our children. We are always attentive to their proper development and their health in general. It may happen that our son complains of very strong pains in his ankles, which prevent him from even sleeping in the evening. This could be due to growth. However, if the pain persists beyond 10 years, it could be a symptom of an incorrect shape of the plantar arch, or so-called flat feet. Left untreated, flat feet could lead to knee and ankle problems. It should be noted that this disorder is not linked only to childhood, but could also occur in adulthood, in the presence of risk factors such as obesity, foot trauma, arthritis and aging.

Normally, the inner and central part of the foot does not rest on the ground. The weight is properly distributed on the outside, to allow for a smooth walk. In people with flat feet, the middle and inner part of the foot touches the ground while walking and this leads to pain and swelling in the joints.
Flat feet can remain asymptomatic, in which case you shouldn’t need to see your doctor. Other times you may experience pain in the sole, heel and ankle, as well as swelling in the instep and rapid fatigue.
In the presence of these symptoms, it would be good to contact an orthopedist, who will evaluate the foot mechanics and subject the patient to some specific tests, to make a correct diagnosis. There are several elements that may suggest the presence of this malformation. For example, if you notice that the soles of the shoes wear out faster in the inner area, or if, visibly, the arch of the foot is missing or if you complain of weak and sensitive feet.
Beware of swelling and pain in feet and ankles because according to experts they could be a symptom of this problem that should not be underestimated
The treatment of this malformation is preventive in nature. To avoid painful problems such as hammer toes and hallux valgus in adulthood, the orthopedist usually proposes the use of orthotics and possibly exercises and sports designed for muscle strengthening. Only if conservative treatments do not give results, the doctor might suggest surgery, usually to be performed between 9 and 14 years of age. Even in adulthood, you can ask for the advice of a competent orthopedic doctor and the same goes: first the conservative is used and only later, if necessary, is the intervention evaluated. Therefore, beware of swelling and pain in the feet and ankles, because they could hide a more serious problem, not to be underestimated. If in doubt, it is good to ask for a medical consultation and absolutely avoid putting into practice home remedies!
