This is the balance sheet of a year of pandemic that young Italians give, photographed by the “Research on the trust of young people in science”, carried out by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale with the support of the Department of Political and Statistical Economics of the University of Siena.

The results of the survey, which involved 4,000 students between 14 and 19 years old, which will be presented today by the scientific director Alfonso Molina and discussed with the experts of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, scientific partner of the Fattore J project, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale with the collaboration of Janssen Italia and the patronage of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.

The Factor J project was launched in the midst of the first lockdown, with the aim of training boys and girls in Italian schools on the issues of prevention and health, raise awareness of respect for those living in conditions of fragility and consolidate trust in science. It involved 12 thousand young people from 63 schools in 7 Italian regions. And among these, four thousand from Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Lombardy, Piedmont, Sicily and Veneto also participated in the research on the trust of young people in science, by answering an online questionnaire of 21 questions.

The results confirmed the children’s confidence in the world of science: what emerged, in fact, was that both during the lockdown and in the current phase, young people changed their behavior especially according to the official guidelines. In second place the indications of family members, followed by the opinions of experts and scientists. While the opinions shared on social media ranked last as a source of information.

To overcome the health emergency, young people consider the role of research for new vaccines and drugs as a priority (81%), followed by the balanced management of policy makers (53%) and correct communication (30%). This is, in fact, the sore point of the Italian management of the pandemic according to the youngest: a “confusing” management, which pushes 78% of young people to ask the institutions for greater clarity in communication and more ability to listen.

That’s not all, however. In the final event of the first edition of J factor hundreds of students will be involved in the creation of Instagram campaigns to affirm the value of science and scientific research and defeat prejudices, fears and fake news. The students will work in six digital rooms dedicated to the therapeutic areas of the project: Hematology, Neuroscience, Infectious Medicine, Dermatology, Gastroenterology and Pulmonary Hypertension.

At their side are Janssen employees and representatives of the national patient associations that are partners of the project. The winning team of this creative jam, which will be able to continue in the realization of the campaign with the support of experts, will be awarded by Pierpaolo Sileri, Undersecretary of Health.

Leveraging on the positive experience of this year, the project will also continue with a second special edition, specifically aimed at increasing the confidence in the progress of science in the younger generations, the awareness of the importance that vaccines have assumed in the history of humanity and the ability to recognize fake news. Young people will be involved in new training and dissemination actions to raise awareness on the importance of correct scientific information and research, as an act of social and civic responsibility.
