Cybersecurity, from visibility to talent: the four unresolved challenges of the pandemic

Visibility gap, fragmentation of technology, lack of talent e unknowns about the return on spending on the security investment front. These are the four unresolved challenges of the cybersecurity with which we must deal in 2022. This is what emerges from the report produced by McKinsey & Company titled “The unsolved opportunities for cybersecurity providers”.

Everything starts from Covid 19 pandemic and the changes it has brought to the sector over the past two years IT security, with the growth of cyberattacks and the spread of agile work. The development of smart working, in particular, has created many problems for IT security managers to make connections and workstations safe and efficient even remotely. Cybersecurity providers, therefore, have had to adapt to changes and have concentrated efforts and strategies to face the scenario that opens up in the post-pandemic. The goal is to protect companies’ resources in terms of data, devices, people, networks, machines and applications from cyberattacks. To do this, the phases of prevention, detection, response and recovery must evolve according to the IT risks and become increasingly effective. This is why it is necessary to win the four challenges indicated in the report di McKinsey & Company.

In the first place there is the challenge concerning the “Visibility gap”. To recognize when, where and why an IT security problem occurs, the digital infrastructure needs to be “visible”. McKinsey himself highlighted how about 60% of buyers analyze and evaluate less than 40% of the register data of their companies. On the topic of technological fragmentation (the second challenge), companies are faced with the challenge of the timeliness of technology decisions, as different technologies, applications and vendors are used in an organization. Often a company may have more than 100 third-party security tools in use. Consequently, multi-cloud and hybrid security will continue to be paramountMcKinsey’s report reads.

The third challenge, however, concerns the talents. In 2021, more than 3.12 million cybersecurity jobs globally remained uncovered. The talent shortage is a huge problem and affects both customers and suppliers, the report explains. Finally, the last challenge is the one on return on expenditure of the resources invested in safety. The most successful cybersecurity program, he explains McKinsey, is what no one notices and which allows the underlying business to run smoothly. Organizations today struggle to understand how to measure the return or value of resources spent on cybersecurity.
