After the diagnosis, it can be quite overwhelming for children and parents to deal with pumps, sensors, etc. And some devices shouldn’t even be used by children themselves. The new issue of the pharmacy magazine “Diabetes Guide” shows what children can do themselves and what families need to know.

Small children with type 1 diabetes cannot and should not use the pumps. Key locks and the setting of a maximum insulin dose ensure safety here. “Nevertheless, the children have to learn: stay away!” says Dr. Angela Galler, head of pediatric diabetology at the Berlin Charité.

In order for the systems to run optimally, you have to feed them a lot of information, such as correction factors, carbohydrate-insulin ratio and basal rate. Families learn what they need to know in training courses, refresher courses, diabetes camps or rehabilitation.

It is also important that children have an emergency plan if the technology fails. You can measure your blood sugar on your finger. The equipment for this belongs in the child’s emergency bag. If the school or daycare calls because the pump catheter has slipped out, parents have two hours to reset it.

Basically, according to qualified psychologist Julia Uber from the diabetes outpatient clinic at the University Hospital of Tübingen in an interview, it is important to “pay attention to the child’s signals. Does he or she want to take responsibility himself? Smaller children can, for example, help to disinfect the skin area, before the sensor is placed. At primary school age, you can involve the child in reading the blood sugar values or weighing the amount of food. This way he can grow in gently.”
