First prosthetic surgery with augmented reality – Medicine

by admin

(ANSA) – MILAN, 25 JUN – A difficult shoulder prosthetic surgery was performed in Parma, for the first time using the so-called ‘augmented reality’, with which the surgeon integrates real images of the operating field with virtual ones pre-programmed in the preoperative phase, available through a particular type of glasses.

The implant was performed at the Piccole Figlie Hospital (Lifenet Group), by the team of Dr. Piero Budassi on an 80-year-old patient who suffered from right omarthrosis with an important serous effusion.

“It was a difficult prosthetic reconstruction operation – specifies Budassi – in a very damaged shoulder. The patient recovered very quickly and will soon be able to begin a rehabilitation process”. ‘Augmented reality’ (unlike ‘virtual reality’ which involves viewing images that are not real ones) allows you to enrich human sensory perception by adding information to real images.

“For the first time in the world we have applied this method – explains Budassi – using the NextAr platform, created by the company Medacta International, for a shoulder surgery. We have used these augmented reality techniques thanks to the use of a particular type of eyewear. which superimposes the image processed with the computer to that seen directly by the surgeon “. The main advantages of this method consist in increasing the precision in positioning the implant and increasing the ability of the organism to be integrated from a bio-mechanical point of view. This technique provides a faster speed in performing complex surgeries and a simplification of operating room procedures. (HANDLE).
