Berlin: (hib/PK) The federal government’s tenth experience report on the Stem Cell Act (StZG) is available as information (20/10550). In the reporting period (January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021), 19 separate applications for approval of the import and use or approval of the use of human embryonic stem cells (hES cells) in accordance with Section 6 StZG were submitted to the Robert Koch Institute in accordance with the information. The total of 22 authorizations issued during the reporting period were issued to 16 individuals or institutions, six of which already had an authorization for the import and use of hES cells. As the template also shows, from the StZG coming into force in July 2002 to the end of the reporting period, 175 permits for the import and/or use of hES cells were issued to natural or legal persons.

According to the Federal Government, stem cell research makes important and ever-increasing contributions to fundamental understanding of developmental biology and innovative findings in medicine and treatment approaches. The hES cells are the basis of innovative research projects. There remains strong interest in their use in research, the report said.
