Known for its (alleged) health benefits, ginseng is rich in active compounds that appear to act on the central nervous system, fight oxidative stress, reduce inflammation and regulate cortisol, helping to improve energy levels.

The study on ginseng and sport—The hypothesis that ginseng is also a precious ally for those who practice physical activity arises from the observations of Borja Muñoz of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Barcelona (Spain), during his tenure as coach and injury specialist at a football team in China, where ginseng is a staple in traditional medicine. Players seemed to report notable benefits from its consumption, with effects comparable to those of an energy drink. “We found that ginseng can play a significant role as a dietary supplement when it comes to recovery after exercise,” admits Muñoz.

Researchers analyzed the impact of ginseng on reducing fatigue and muscle recovery after playing sports, finding that regular consumption significantly reduced muscle damage and post-exercise fatigue in a group of healthy adults, as well as contributing to muscle regeneration.

Conclusions—The Catalan researchers’ conclusions open the door to future investigations into the potential of ginseng as a supplement for physical activity and in the prevention of injuries.
