Physicists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology proved Stephen Hawking’s theorem, which states that the area of the event horizon of a black hole will never decrease.
The paradox is that this statement contradicts another Hawking prediction that the surface area of a black hole will evaporate over time. Related research results have been published in “Physical Review Letters” (Physical Review Letters). A summary of the press release on this research work has been posted on the Phys.org website.
Scientists analyzed the observation results of gravitational wave event GW150914. The gravitational wave passed through the earth in 2015 and was recorded by the LIGO Observatory, the laser interference gravitational wave observatory. This signal is generated by the merging of two black holes, which creates a larger black hole and releases a lot of energy. If Hawking’s theorem holds, then the area of the final black hole should not be less than the sum of the areas of the two original black holes. The physicist concluded that with 95% confidence, the area did not really decrease after the merger.
