Anyone who has done voluntary work knows how many stories can arise: of friendship, work, even love or life projects never imagined before. Because those who choose to donate their time to a good cause have a lot to share. And it is precisely from these experiences that ‘Involontaria Off -The exam’ is born, a film for TV which, however, is much more: it is a project that moves, involves and transmits to the end the life paths of the forty associations of patients who they were co-authors, architects and protagonists of this initiative. The film, made with the unconditional support of the MSD Foundation, will be broadcast on Sunday 15 May, at 5.30 pm on MTV (channel 131 SKY, with a preview at 5.00 pm on the YouTube channel and Facebook page MTV Italia) and in streaming on NOW TV, at 9.00 pm on VH1 (channel 167 digital terrestrial), while from May 16 it will be available in streaming on Prime Video.
The plot between friendships, love affairs and cancer
The story on which the film is based is simple and for this reason it is easy to identify with the protagonists and perhaps inspire in someone the desire to try to volunteer. “The protagonist is Sara who is 18 years old, has just earned a high school diploma, a degree course in Medicine to undertake”, he says Alessandro Guida who directed the film. “While preparing for the admission test to be taken in September, she has an unexpected summer experience in a voluntary association that follows cancer patients and ex-patients who have developed breast cancer with Brca mutation. After the initial mistrust, the future doctor becomes passionate and discovers a reality of empathic people, but above all rigorous and competent “. Her brief experience as a volunteer crosses relationships of love and friendship inside and outside the Association, in particular with her friend / enemy Arianna with whom Sara fought Luca’s love and who is the daughter of a cancer patient with the Brca mutation and risks inheriting it. At the end of her path, the girl reviews many of her certainties and is ready to start with a new awareness towards her career.

Inspire young people
But why make a film about volunteering? “During the darkest days of the pandemic, thousands of young people contributed, through the reference associations, to help the weakest sections of the population throughout the country”, he replies Goffredo Freddi, director of the MSD Foundation. “Today, volunteering is, on a daily basis, a real bridge of solidarity towards Ukraine. And there are many associations – even among the protagonists of the film – that have taken action to guarantee support for the Ukrainian population. With this project, the MSD Foundation renews its commitment to the promotion of Health Literacy as a driving force for social and cultural development, betting on the incredible potential for change and innovation of the new generations “.

Stories live
Through the stories, the film ‘Involontaria Off – The exam’ aims to motivate young people to approach the world of volunteering, telling the daily commitment of the Associations to support patients and health care through the voice of protagonists: the screenplay of the film was developed through a participatory process in which the 40 Associations involved – also active in very different areas – offered the screenwriters valuable narrative ideas, ideas and experiences. “The starting point for this project was the close knowledge of the world of Associations, listening directly to the voice of real volunteers that allowed us to return an authentic portrait of volunteering”, says the director Alessandro Guida. “The only fiction is the narrative ploy, the spark of the story, when the protagonist Sara, while preparing for the admission test to Medicine, in her first experience as a volunteer finds herself having to help her friend / enemy Arianna . To tell this reality, I sought a balance that would combine intense moments, love scenes and even funny situations. All the actors involved helped me in this, not only the professional ones, but also the four volunteers who played small cameos in the film ”.

Promote prevention
To the story of the daily life of the voluntary associations, the script combines awareness messages on some important public health issues, such as prevention and correct lifestyles. Topics on which volunteers can play an important information and education role. “Initiatives like this one – he comments Antonio Gaudioso, Head of the technical secretariat of the Minister of Health – allow you to deepen the value that volunteering has for the Country System and the Health System and the most appropriate training courses to bring young people closer to this precious human and professional experience of civic commitment “. The actor also brought his testimony Cesare BocciMimì Augello in the fiction by Commissioner Montalbano, who participated in the preview of the film held at the Casa del Cinema in Rome, and personally committed to promoting the value of the Third Sector with great sensitivity and attention: “For years I have discovered the great value of volunteering both in Italy and abroad: it is an experience that changes your life above all because it allows you to receive a lot, more than what you give “.

The world of volunteering
By interweaving attention to health and social issues, sentimental comedy, psychological journey, the film manages to tell the world of volunteering in an original and non-holographic way – a reality that in Italy involves 5,500,000 people, 9% of the population – by transmitting above all a message to the young public to whom it is addressed: we can all become volunteers, but the heart is not enough, training, preparation, professionalism are needed. A demanding path, however rewarded by the possibility of having experiences that form and accelerate personal maturation.
