Malignant tumor removed from an inoperable 81-year-old in Rimini – Healthcare

The Gastroenterology team at the Infermi hospital in Rimini successfully performed a delicate endoscopy operation which allowed the removal of a malignant stomach tumor and thus saved the life of an 81-year-old woman. The patient had a 6×4 centimeter lesion, “a well-differentiated infiltrating adenocarcinoma – explains the head physician Marco Di Marco – but for reasons linked to her general conditions and her multiple comorbidities it was judged inoperable”.

The Rimini team decided to proceed with the only possible operation, the endoscopic one, “however very complex, precisely because the lesion was already a malignant tumor, therefore with very little chance of being radical”, adds the specialist. Thanks to an advanced technique called endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) it was possible at the end of November to “completely remove the lesion obtaining endoscopic and histological radicality as if surgery had been performed, and at the same time we managed to preserve the organ and its function by providing precious chances of survival to the lady”, specifies Di Marco.

The technique was introduced about twenty years ago in Japan and, unlike surgery, does not require a scalpel.

The removal takes place with accessories that dig and remove the tumor while safeguarding the healthy tissues. It is usually used in early stage tumors, unlike what happened to the patient. This is the peculiarity of the operation, which lasted about two hours and which Doctor Di Marco performed assisted by nurses Manuel Marchesciano and Annalisa Saragoni.
