Electricity has played an important role in people’s lives since the end of the 19th century. The Hamburg Museum Electrum shows more than 1,000 historical devices – from record players to hairdryers.
Electrical devices such as radios, toasters and televisions have made life easier or provided entertainment in everyday life. The Electrum in Harburg not only shows many devices, but also amazes those interested with small experiments on the subject of electricity.
First machines and lamps with electricity
Many exhibits come from a collection of the former Hamburg Electricity Works (HEW). As early as the 1920s, the electricity supplier began collecting equipment to train its employees. The initial focus was on the electrification of Hamburg.
The museum also traces the history of the electrification of the Hanseatic city on a timeline on its homepage – starting with the first electric machine for metal extraction at the Norddeutsche Affinerie in 1873 and the first electric arc lamps in the port of Hamburg in 1879.
Expert guided tours of special devices
From heart failure to hair loss: The Helio-Lux device was developed to cure illnesses.
If you don’t want to look at the exhibits on your own, you can take a guided tour and get an expert explanation of the function of some of the strange devices. The short tours take place on Sundays at 2 p.m. and the costs are included in the admission price. Tours can also be booked outside of opening hours; they are chargeable and last one to two hours.
Formerly in Barmbek, since 2011 in Harburg
The first exhibition rooms were built in Barmbek in the 1960s. This later became the Electrum Museum, which had to close in 2001 due to lack of money. In 2011, the collection was finally able to move into the new rooms on Harburger Schloßstrasse. A support association takes care of the ongoing museum operations.
