What is it then? Picacism is the disturbance of those who feel the desire to ingest or eat inappropriate things, which have no nutritional value, such as ice, or directly inedible objects. It is quite understandable why this disorder can be dangerous. The consequences for the digestive system are not simple: you can go from simple stomach pain, to blockages or, in the most serious cases, we can also talk about poisoning. Or let’s think if this happens to small children: choking is really simple. Even for adults, if they have ingested a large object.
But where does the pica? It is often linked to mental disorders, such as obsessive compulsive disorder. At other times it can be triggered by severe food shortages. To be diagnosed, he does not have specific tests: we can realize that a neighbor of ours suffers from these disorders if the analyzes reveal strong nutritional deficiencies.
It can also be made visible by any visible wounds on the lips, gums or dental lesions.
