More than 1,000 schools in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are now taking part in the GemüseAckerdemie, an educational program run by Acker eV and supported by the AOK. On the field of the elementary school at the Regenweiher in Berlin-Neukölln, Dr. Carola Reimann, Chairwoman of the AOK Federal Association, and Cem Özdemir, Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture at a planting campaign today. To this says Dr. Carola Reimann:

“Children should know as early as possible where the food on their plate comes from. In the vegetable farm they sow, tend and harvest and thus learn about the natural connections in food production themselves. The results of the AOK show how important this is -Family study that we presented at the end of last year Although 82 percent of the parents surveyed see the climate crisis as a major threat to their children’s future and 79 percent consider the influence of nutrition on the climate and environment to be significant, this does not have an equally positive effect on the eating habits of families in everyday life: Only 32 percent consider sustainable nutrition to be important or very important.

According to the AOK family study, 87 percent of parents would like their children to learn about climate and environmentally friendly nutrition at school. That is why we as AOK promote health education and sustainable nutrition. Health education has to be schooled and belongs in all curricula. In Baden-Württemberg, the AOK and the Ministry of Education are using ‘ScienceKids’ to show how this can be integrated into the regular subjects taught in the first to tenth grades. It is not money that is lacking, but the political will to bring this model to all schools nationwide.

In addition, 83 percent of the parents surveyed consider it important that their child is fed healthily and sustainably when they are not at home. That is why we support the plans of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture to establish the quality standards of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) in community catering by 2030 as binding. This was anchored in the cornerstones of the nutrition strategy, which is to be decided at the end of this year. This requires the willingness of the federal, state and local authorities and private sponsors to provide joint financing, networking and cooperation. The goal must be to offer all children and young people high-quality, balanced meals, regardless of their parents’ income. Because how and what we eat not only affects the climate and the living conditions of all living things on our planet, but also the health of all people.”
