The watchword in the center-right is to minimize. The vote in Sardinia was a local vote which did not and will not have an impact on the government. But in the evening it was Giorgia Meloni herself who revealed, despite the jokes and smiles of the speech to the foreign press, all the bitterness about the result on the island. “I lost Sardinia”, she admits bluntly, at the same time sending what sounds like a warning to her allies: “I am good but never underestimate a good person forced to become bad”. Then the burst of pride contained in a joke: “If you have some money left over to invest well in a serious nation, with a long-lived government, there would be this BTp Valore that I take the liberty of advertising…”.

On the day that certifies Alessandra Todde’s victory over Paolo Truzzu, it is the moment to bring unity and self-criticism to the stage even if here and there, despite the attempt to hide frictions under the carpet, distinctions between the allies re-emerge. The candidate, of course, assumes responsibility for having failed the test. And the prime minister signed a joint note together with Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini admitting that some “mistakes” have been made and will have to be used to avoid repeating others, starting from the next electoral rounds.
In the end the centre-right pays by remaining united, the coalition has increased its consensus “touching 50%”, is the leitmotif. And Sardinia, as noted at the top levels of Fdi, changes color every five years. Everyone then interprets the numbers in their own way.
The League with the Psd’az has improved its performance on the island, the reasoning underlined by Matteo Salvini’s deputy, Andrea Crippa, rejecting the suspicions that hover over the League of having orchestrated the disjointed vote. “Impossible,” he assures. Underlining, as they also do in Fdi, that in the cities, starting from Cagliari, Truzzu has had a collapse in votes compared to the coalition. “More than a disjointed vote”, the recurring comment. Of course, the Northern League member quips, “the territory has not understood the criterion of power relations”. Local candidacies cannot be done “with the Cencelli manual”, echoes Massimo Bitonci, looking at Veneto, while Luca Zaia is still counting on the third term game not being “closed”. In theory, his party should re-present the amendment rejected in the commission in the Chamber, but the result should not change, explains the Minister of Relations with Parliament Luca Ciriani, inviting his ally again to talk about it calmly after the European elections.
That, the reasoning that is done in Fdi, is the real game.

“Touché to Todde who had a good electoral campaign” but administrative and regional “are a local issue. See you on June 11th”, says the group leader in the Chamber Tommaso Foti. In the meantime, however, we should avoid arriving too close to the vote to identify the candidates, as happened in Sardinia, and stigmatized by Matteo Salvini (“if you change a running candidate it’s more complicated”). So much so that the center-right table for the administrative elections has met again in an attempt to speed up the next choices. “We are for Bardi, with a broader convergence” in Basilicata, reiterates Maurizio Gasparri, underlining that in addition to the name, “the conditions to win” must be created. And it would be closing in on the outgoing governor Vito Bardi (“there are no FDI preclusions” assures Giovanni Donzelli), even if the League is convinced that they have “valid alternatives”. Of course, the party of via Bellerio, which could receive the OK for the choice of Eike Schmidt for the race for mayor of Florence, after the step backwards on Christian Solinas, is aiming for Cagliari and the reconfirmation of Donatella Tesei in Umbria. But we vote in June and in the autumn. There is time to decide, allies say.
