Italian Study Links Stress and Poor Sleep Quality to Risk of Periodontitis

A recent study conducted at the University of Siena has found a connection between perceived stress, poor sleep quality, and the risk of developing grade 3 or 4 periodontitis. This serious form of the disease affects the gums and supporting tissues of the tooth.

The study, led by Crystal Marruganti and coordinated by Simone Grandini and Nicola Discepoli, was published in the Journal of Periodontology. According to Discepoli, who is also a member of the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIdP), individuals with high levels of stress are five times more likely to develop periodontitis, while those with poor sleep quality face a threefold increase in risk. When combined, stress and disturbed sleep can raise the risk of periodontitis by almost six times.

The research involved 235 participants who completed validated questionnaires to assess their stress levels and sleep quality. They also underwent oral examinations to diagnose periodontitis according to established protocols.

The findings showed that individuals experiencing stress or poor sleep quality were significantly more likely to have periodontitis. Discepoli emphasizes the need for further research to explore the role of stress and sleep disturbances as potential risk factors for the disease.

Prospective studies tracking patients over time will be key to understanding the impact of these factors on periodontitis development. The implications of this study could have important implications for preventive oral health strategies in the future. (ANSA)
