Thirty out of the 37 places for Family Medicine in Cantabria have been filled, with ten of them being assigned just this past Thursday. This news comes as a relief to the healthcare sector, as there has been a growing concern over the shortage of family doctors in the region.
Despite the challenges and long hours that come with being a family doctor, many MIRs (medical residents) are eager to pursue a career in this field. One MIR stated, “I know I’m going to work a lot of hours, but it’s worth it.” This positive attitude is encouraging for the future of Family Medicine in Cantabria.
In contrast, in Galicia, there is still a shortage of specialists choosing Family Medicine, with 70% of the places remaining vacant. This disparity highlights the need for more doctors to consider this specialty and the importance of ensuring adequate healthcare for the community.
The interest in Family Medicine among MIRs has also been demonstrated in other regions. Medical journals and publications have been reporting on the growing interest and commitment of medical residents to pursue a career in Family and Community Medicine.
As the healthcare sector continues to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of the population, the role of family doctors becomes increasingly crucial. It is hoped that more medical residents will consider this specialty and help address the shortage of family doctors in various regions across the country.
