Surgery at Rizzoli, 17 year old ‘reborn’ after years of pain – Medicine

A combined treatment of embolization and electrosclerotherapy, one of a kind, to allow a 17-year-old to lead a normal life, abandoning the constant pain that had been plaguing him for some time due to an arteriovenous malformation of the gluteal region – discovered over seven years ago – which prevented him from sitting for more than a few minutes, from sleeping well, from playing sports due to constant pain. The treatment was carried out last July by the doctors of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute thanks to the Angio-Suite instrumentation supplied to the hospital.

Last summer, using the machine, it was possible to carry out a unique combined treatment. In detail, explains Dr. Giancarlo Facchini, interventional radiologist at the ‘Rizzoli’ Interventional Radiology, “we decided to perform embolization and electrosclerotherapy in a single session. After embolization-only treatments, we decided to also act on the venous part and not just arterial, therefore also performing electrosclerotherapy, an experimental technique with which the first patients were treated”.

Electrosclerotherapy is a technique in which a sclerosing drug is injected into the malformation, subsequently targeted electric discharges generate an electric field which allows better absorption of the drug by the cells of the malformation.

“This combination of treatments, unique in its kind, has led to a clear improvement in the condition” of the 17-year-old, observes the director of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the ‘Rizzoli’, Marco Miceli – who has resumed playing sports, sleeping well, to lead an active life perfectly in line with his young age”.

The Angio-Suite of the Emilian hospital was acquired thanks to an investment of 2 million euros, it is equipped with a digital angiograph and a 128-slice computed tomography. This hybrid system guarantees greater precision in patient treatment and allows the diagnosis and treatment process to be speeded up.
