The first baby was born in Verona with the reimplantation of ovarian tissue: the baby was born last month and is doing well. The birth was the happy conclusion of the personal story of a mother from Verona who, as a teenager, fell ill with Ewing’s Sarcoma and as a result of the chemotherapy she irremediably lost her reproductive capacity. Today, little Marta (fictitious name) is the first child in Verona born with a pregnancy obtained through the reimplantation of ovarian tissue. Marta was born spontaneously. The mother, 36 years old, had discovered at the age of 21 that she was ill and therefore she would have had to undergo gonadotoxic therapies.
At the time, 15 years ago, the patient had turned to specialists at the Sant’Orsola Polyclinic in Bologna who encouraged her to undertake the fertility preservation process, with the removal of the ovarian tissue to freeze it and preserve it in liquid nitrogen .
