The Unseen Pandemic of Unhappiness: A Global Crisis

As the world grapples with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, another crisis looms largely unnoticed – the pandemic of unhappiness. While it may not affect the physical health of individuals, this invisible pandemic is wreaking havoc on mental well-being, particularly among adolescents.

Recent data and alarming cries from psychologists, psychiatrists, and neuropsychiatrists worldwide have highlighted the staggering impact of mental health problems on young people. In Europe alone, there are nine million adolescents struggling with conditions such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Shockingly, suicide has become the leading cause of death among 15 to 19-year-olds in recent years.

The underlying reasons for this surge in unhappiness are complex. The 21st century began with a climate of fear, including threats to health, environment, and economic stability. The erosion of collective dreams and a loss of faith in the future have contributed to a pervasive sense of solitude and despair.

Addressing this crisis requires a multifaceted approach. From reimagining the role of schools as centers for both education and socialization to implementing stringent guidelines on social media use, there are concrete steps that can be taken to combat the pandemic of unhappiness.

The World Happiness Report editor has issued a call to action, urging governments to recognize the urgency of the situation, particularly for young people who are facing a mid-life crisis at an early age. The isolation and fragmentation brought on by technology and social media have exacerbated feelings of loneliness and disconnection.

Above all, the prevailing sense of fear and polarization must be addressed. By fostering a sense of community, promoting social interaction, and reigniting hope in the face of fear, we can collectively work towards a healthier, happier future for all. It is time to confront the unseen pandemic of unhappiness with compassion, understanding, and action.
