the pressure of the Regions to avoid blocking the country

The number of people stuck at home because they are positive in Italy is growing every day and getting closer to 1.3 million. To solve the problem of this army of infected people who cannot work and which leaves companies and public services unprotected, the Regions have prepared a document proposing to cut the duration of quarantene for the asymptomatic. The text drawn up by the technical coordination of the Health Commission of the conference of the Regions reads: “In the current context, the same rules for everyone are required to exit isolation (regardless of previous vaccination or infection) and easily understandable by the population general. Therefore, the need to update the duration of the isolation should be considered by providing a total time of 5 days, with the end of the same in the absence of symptoms for at least 2 days and without the need to carry out a test. Such strategies are already applied in several Western countries. In Spain and the United Kingdom isolation is no longer provided for positives. In the USA, Germany (with final self-test), Sweden, Austria, 5 days of isolation are foreseen ».

STRATEGY

In summary: if you are asymptomatic, after five days you go back to work using the mask. This proposal recalls the debate that Professor has sparked Alberto Zangrillo of the San Raffaele in Milan that on Twitter wrote: «It happens that serial workers, positive for the Covid 19 test, do not work for weeks, although asymptomatic. This is how the country is destroyed ». Beyond the provocation, there remains the need for reflection because, for example, in Italian hospitals there are at least 20 thousand doctors and nurses blocked by Covid. The Government, however, is very cautious: there is a fear that, in this phase of high circulation of the virus, excessive flexibility in regulating isolations could lead to an increase in cases. Furthermore, the document of the Regions asks to reduce the contact tracing of the asymptomatic, which takes away resources without giving effective aid. He asks for new rules on masks. It proposes: obligation of Ffp2 in health facilities for both workers and users; mandatory surgical mask on all means of transport and in indoor places open to the public.

The government, as confirmed by Minister Roberto Speranza, intends to speed up the fourth dose also for over 60s, after the opening of the EMA (European drug agency) the other day. Hope: «We have always followed the indications of the scientific authorities, in particular of Ema and Ecdc. There is a confrontation in these hours ». Aifa (Italian drug agency) will decide next week, with the green light for the fourth dose for the over 60s (on a voluntary basis).

AND GIVE

Even yesterday the quota of 100 thousand cases was exceeded (105 deaths for Covid). Yet, the race is slowing down, as analyzed by Professor Giovanni Sebastiani, a mathematician of the CNR: «I always rely on the observation of the positivity rate of the molecular swabs, the only reliable data. And from what I see, the descent will begin between next week and the next ». This usually precedes the decline of the other indicators as well. The periodic report of the Ministry of Health and Higher Institute of Health, released yesterday, photographs the previous week and tells us that the Rt, the transmission index, is very high, at 1.4, as is the incidence (1,071 cases out of 100 thousand inhabitants in seven days). The growth of hospitalizations continues. Siaarti (Italian Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Intensive Care and Intensive Care) and the Higher Institute of Health processed the data of those hospitalized in intensive care as of July 5: 13 percent tested positive but were in hospital for other reasons, on 5, 1 percent had severe symptoms attributable to Covid. Silvio Brusaferro, president of ISSA: “The pressure on intensive care is still low thanks to vaccines.”
