Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed he underwent surgery last week to put a pacemaker and that “it’s going great.” On Monday’s episode of his “Arnold’s Pump Club” podcast, the Hollywood actor and former governor of California said: “Last Monday I had surgery for a pacemaker and I’ve become a little more of a machine.”

Health conditions

Schwarzenegger said sharing the news “goes against much of my Austrian upbringing, where no one ever talked about medical issues. Everything related to health care was kept to themselves.” The 76-year-old actor, who explained that he was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, said he had received many messages from people born with the same health condition “who told me that by talking about my valve replacement surgeries I gave them the courage to and the hope of addressing their problems.” And he added: “I know that going against my instinct for confidentiality and being transparent helps people, so it seems right to talk about it.”

The intervention in 1997

In 1997, Schwarzenegger underwent a pulmonary valve replacement. He then underwent open heart surgery in 2018 to replace the old pulmonary valve that had been inserted. Two years later, he underwent a third surgery to replace his aortic valve. The installation of the pacemaker is the fourth surgery that the actor has undergone and which was recommended to him by doctors «because some scar tissue from my previous surgery had made my heartbeat irregular. It had been like this for a few years.” And he reveals: «I’m doing great. I had surgery on Monday and on Friday I was already at a big environmental event with my friend and colleague Jane Fonda. No one would have thought that I would start the week with surgery,” he said, thanking the medical team at the Cleveland Clinic. “I’m still here thanks to medical innovation and I’m very careful to stay in touch with my doctors and listen to them,” he concluded.
