A lesson in tradition: primary school students learn about forgotten fruits

Medlars, jujubes, figs: the “Fruit and vegetables in schools” project on tour among the educational farms of the Marca. Here are the institutes involved

TREVISO. Discovering farmyard animals, the traditions of our agriculture. The PDO and PGI products, but also the “forgotten fruits”: medlar, jujube, figs. The historical mulberries, the hatching of the eggs.

All this was able to study and appreciate the 1,236 pupils (with 138 teachers) of 20 primary schools of the Marca, involved in the “Fruit and vegetables in schools” project, promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Treviso-Belluno Chamber of Commerce.

The initiative took shape between May and June with 29 visits to five educational farms in our province: Col Maor di Pederobba, Erba loca di Breda, Belmoro di Santa Lucia, Topinambur di Treviso, Campoverde di Castelfranco. Experiential and artisanal workshops coincided with the return to school outings after the blackout of the hardest years of the pandemic.

«A good result of participation, considering that the initial projection was of 700 students involved», comments Mario Pozza, president of the Treviso-Belluno Chamber of Commerce. The ministerial funding is equal to 44,500 euros, but so far the investment has been limited to 21,916.92 euros. The remaining sum will be used next year for the “tastings” project, limited in these months due to the precautions related to
Covid.

The primary schools involved: Prati di Treviso, Canova di Cornuda, Pascon and Collarin di Salgareda, Marchesan di Ramon di Loria, Monte Grappa di Borso, Giovanni Paolo I di Godega, Frank di Mogliano, Pianca and Pascoli di Conegliano, Madonnina del Grappa, Margherita Sarto, Monsignor Bernardi and Don Bosco di Riese, Aldo Moro di Ponte di Piave, Collegio Canova di Possagno, Palladio di Maser, as well as the primaries of Susegana, Altivole and Villarazzo di Castelfranco.
