The United States, the European Union, Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada criticized China’s trade practices in the eighth review of China’s trade policy by the World Trade Organization in October, saying that China is engaging in “unfair trade practices” and imposing “economic Coercion”.
Xi Jinping made the above remarks when he attended the China International Import Expo online on Thursday night. He also said that China will pay more attention to expanding imports, promoting balanced trade development, and promoting high-level opening up.
Xi Jinping also added that China will deeply participate in international cooperation such as green, low-carbon and digital economy, and actively promote its accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (CPTPP) and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement.
However, in the past, there have been many examples of CCP leaders failing to fulfill their promises. Chinese and American officials have held several video meetings in recent weeks, but there are few signs that bilateral tensions have eased. On October 4, Dai Qi announced the four practices of the Biden administration’s trade policy towards China, emphasizing that the CCP’s unfair trade practices harm American labor and industries, and that Beijing has gained an unfair advantage in the global trading system. She said that China has failed to reform its non-market policies or fulfill the promises it has made in high-level dialogues with US officials over the past 15 years, while hinting that the US will focus on the CCP’s industrial subsidy policy.
“Nihon Keizai Shimbun” quoted a research report from the Eurasian Group on October 30: “The two sides are unlikely to make concrete progress on key trade issues, especially the United States is unlikely to send a signal of support for tariff reduction, let alone Said that the measures to relax technical restrictions are expected to stimulate Beijing to shift to serious participation (negotiations) before the mid-term elections in the United States next year.”

Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post quoted a Chinese government consultant who chose to remain anonymous as saying that Beijing may maintain some subsidies and regulations on state-owned enterprises, but it will gradually approach the standards required to join the CPTPP.
The consultant acknowledged that many countries are concerned about China’s competitive environment and the role of state-owned enterprises and subsidies.
