The companies in MV defied higher energy prices in 2023 and made noticeable gains against the national trend. Surprisingly, industry turned out to be a key driver. However, wages in the northeast remain low.

Things are going comparatively well for the economy in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – in 2023 it recorded the second highest growth compared to the federal states. As the statistical office announced on Thursday in Schwerin, the gross domestic product rose by 3.3 percent compared to the previous year. Only Rhineland-Palatinate recorded a larger increase of 4.9 percent. Nationwide, however, the gross domestic product fell slightly.

Industry is growing strongly

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, according to the statistics office, the manufacturing sector in particular recorded a strong increase of 6.5 percent. The main driver here was industry, which – contrary to the negative national trend – increased its economic output by 19.3 percent. The construction industry in the northeast, however, recorded a significantly greater decline than in other federal states, with a decline of 4.1 percent. In the service sector, which makes the largest contribution to gross domestic product in the northeast at almost 69 percent, gross value added rose by 2.8 percent. Trade, transport, warehousing, hospitality and communication grew particularly strongly at 9.2 percent.

Wages in MV below average

When it comes to wages, however, the northeast continues to be at the bottom. While the national average earns around 42,000 euros gross, in MV only around 84 percent of this earns – around 36,000 euros. This is the lowest value in a country comparison. The reasons for the lower pay are smaller companies and comparatively little industry. An above-average number of people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania work for the minimum wage.
