Bari commemorates Giuseppe Mizzi, innocent victim of the mafia – News

“Today I am here to thank you for the citizens you are, for the city you are and to ask you to move forward: do not allow anyone to despise the work we have done, that you have done. Because Bari is a respectable city, where there certainly exists the mafia, but here there are above all honest citizens and there are many more of them. We owe it to Giuseppe Mizzi, to his family and to all the innocent victims of the mafia that this city still mourns.” This was said by the mayor of Bari, Antonio Decaro, who this morning laid a wreath of flowers in via Venezia, in Carbonara, to honor the memory of Giuseppe Mizzi, who 13 years ago was killed by mistake at the age of 39 in front of his home for mistaken identity in a mafia ambush: the Bari boss Antonio Battista, believed to be affiliated with the Di Cosola clan, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder.

The ceremony was attended by Giuseppe Mizzi’s wife and brother, Catia and Angelo, the vice-prefect Alberto Monno, the regional representative of the Libera association Don Angelo Cassano and the president of Municipality IV Grazia Albergo.

“I am happy – said Decaro – to have brought here once again, among these alleys, this tricolor band, symbol of the institutions, of the State and of the commitment to legality.

I am happy to be here, with you, as mayor and as a citizen of this city. And I would like to thank you for your commitment over these years, for the dignity you have taught me and the strength you have given me. It’s not easy and it wasn’t a given to stay.

But your example was a lesson in courage and resistance for us. Because if it is true that the mafia exists in this city, it is even more true that there is a city that resists the mafia. And he does it every day, in honest work, respecting the rules, caring for others.”
