Budget 2023: 8 instead of 17.1 billion euros deficit

According to the preliminary annual financial statements, the minus for 2023 is 8.0 instead of 17.1 billion euros, as Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (VP) announced on Friday.

This can be attributed to 6.0 billion euros lower expenses and 3.1 billion euros higher income. “When preparing the budget for 2023, it was necessary to make provisions for various crisis scenarios,” said Brunner. But not all of this had to be exhausted.

There were lower expenses than estimated for interest payments, pension insurance payments and a better labor market situation. The funding requirement for economic development and various Cofag guarantee payments was also lower than estimated.

In total, federal expenditure in 2023 amounted to 109.2 billion euros and revenue to 101.2 billion euros. The implementation of the budget was “entirely pleasing,” said Brunner. Criticism came from the Neos: A finance minister who was happy about a loss of eight billion euros was “out of place”.
