Rare Heavy Hailstorm Hits Zhejiang, Citizens Surprised by Egg-Sized Hailstones

On February 21, Wenzhou, Lishui, and other areas in Zhejiang experienced a rare and severe hailstorm, with some hailstones as large as eggs. The unexpected weather phenomenon left locals shocked and puzzled as they had never witnessed such a sight before.

According to reports, the hailstorm hit various towns in Qingtian County, Lishui City, with hailstones ranging from 2 to 5 centimeters in diameter and lasting for about 5 to 10 minutes. The sudden onslaught of heavy rain mixed with hail caught many off guard, resulting in damaged vehicles, injured birds, and swollen arms for some residents.

One citizen, Ms. Zhang, shared her experience of seeing children wearing helmets to collect hailstones and even getting hit herself, causing her arm to swell. The streets were covered with a layer of hailstones up to 20 centimeters thick, creating a unique and challenging situation for pedestrians and drivers alike.

In addition to Lishui, hail also fell in Shangtang Town, Yongjia County, Wenzhou, further adding to the chaos and disruption caused by the unusual weather event. Pictures and videos shared online captured the astonishment of residents as they navigated through the icy streets turned into makeshift glaciers.

The hailstorm coincided with a severe epidemic outbreak in the region, leading to overcrowded hospitals and long queues at emergency departments. Reports indicate that hospitals in Wenzhou and other places in Zhejiang have been overwhelmed with respiratory tract infection cases, with thousands of patients seeking medical attention.

As citizens cope with the aftermath of the rare hailstorm and ongoing health concerns, many have taken to social media to express their astonishment and concerns about the unusual and challenging events unfolding in their region. The combination of severe weather and health crisis serves as a reminder of the unpredictability and fragility of nature and human health.
