IRS Announces Deadline for Americans to Claim $1,400 Stimulus Check

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that US citizens have until May 17 to request a stimulus check of $1,400. This comes as around nine million people have yet to receive their final stimulus check payment from the government.

The stimulus checks are part of the Economic Impact Payments (EIP) that were provided as part of COVID-19 relief efforts in 2020 and the first part of 2021. To claim the recovery discount credit, individuals must submit their individual income tax returns, or Form 1040, regardless of whether they are required to file a tax return or have little to no income.

The IRS has reminded applicants for the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit that time is running out to claim it. Those interested in receiving the stimulus check should file a tax return to receive the refund. While most taxpayers who qualify for the EIP tax relief have already received or claimed their payments, those who did not receive one or more of the economic impact payments could still be eligible.

To be eligible for the 2020 and 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, individuals must be US citizens or resident aliens, not be dependent on another taxpayer, and ensure their Social Security number is up to date. Those with an IRS online account can check if they have received EIPs.

The IRS is urging eligible individuals to take action before the deadline of May 17 to claim their $1,400 stimulus check.
