Corte del Castello to be reopened to the public, Ivrea hopes for funds from the Ministry

There is a ready-made executive project: 800 thousand euros that can be financed at 80 percent, phase two of the rebirth is approaching

IVREA. The possibility of receiving co-financing from the Piedmont Region disappeared last spring, and it is on the Culture Fund of the ministry that the Municipality of Ivrea now places well-founded hopes.

The goal is always the same as it was then: to reopen to the public the courtyard of the Conte Verde castle closed due to inaccessibility since 2016 to make the patrol walkways usable, so as to be able to set events and propose targeted tourist itineraries that finally return to enhance the site.

Ready there is an executive project worth 800 thousand euros which either accesses the tenders or remains unfinished. Municipal resources in this sense are not imaginable. “The one of the Region in which we participated a few months ago was a notice at the counter that saw us arrive among the first excluded”, explains the councilor for public works Michele Cafarelli. A call reserved for Unesco cities “that we do not know if it will be refinanced”. So “we decided to participate in the Culture Fund of the Ministry of Culture, I believe that this is the right way”. The application must be submitted by August 31st. And Ivrea will be there.

Second attempt, therefore, for this which, financing permitting, wants to become phase two of the recovery started in 2020 with the redevelopment of the gate and the external square, as well as the front door (260 thousand euros). In the hope of winning the maximum, that is 80% of the amount. Meanwhile, the Superintendence of archeology, fine arts and landscape of the metropolitan city has given instructions for a plan of archaeological investigations to be carried out inside the court, as a preliminary check for future works, an investigation already entrusted to the specialized operator Intercultura di Bianzè for 1,830 EUR. “The main purpose – details Cafarelli – is to make the internal courtyard area of the castle usable again, as well as the patrol walkways, currently closed to the public”. And to do so “through a series of interventions that include the safety of the facades and roofs of the towers, the construction of a new flooring in the courtyard area, the construction of a connecting staircase between the courtyard and the patrol walkways”.

And then the plant design according to future events, plus “a new lighting system of the castle that upgrades its visual use from every vantage point in the city and enhances the symbolic function of the asset”. The area that can be seen beyond the entrance gate has been closed to the public since the summer of 2016, when some tiles fell off the roof and fell onto the courtyard. During an inspection the technical office declared it unfit for use. From that moment on Sunday visits were stopped. The Ivreaestate exhibition was also suspended.
