Cuban Government rejects external interference in Haiti amidst political crisis

HAVANA- The Cuban government has spoken out against “external interference” in Haiti following the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, emphasizing the need for assistance and cooperation rather than outside influence in the Caribbean nation’s current crisis.

In a statement released by the Cuban Foreign Ministry, it was stated that Haiti requires genuine support for its reconstruction and development, without interference from external sources that have only served to exacerbate the country’s problems.

The Cuban government has been in communication with regional actors regarding the situation in Haiti, reinforcing the belief that the country must find a sovereign solution with international assistance.

“The people of Haiti deserve to find a peaceful and sustainable solution to their challenges, based on their right to self-determination, sovereignty, and independence,” the statement read.

Haiti is currently facing a state of emergency in certain areas, with a curfew in place and escalating violence perpetrated by armed gangs throughout the country.

Prime Minister Henry recently announced his resignation, pending the formation of a transition council that will appoint his successor and facilitate the upcoming presidential elections.

The announcement came following a meeting involving the Caribbean Community (Caricom), United Nations representatives, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, highlighting the international concern surrounding the situation in Haiti.
