Etna awakens, once again, and wakes everyone up, especially the inhabitants of the foothills municipalities, with very loud roars. The volcano continues to give a spectacle and, once again at night, with the 14th paroxysmal event recorded, since last February 16th. The new phase, according to the findings of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology-Etneo Observatory of Catania, again involved the South-East crater and lasted several hours and ended. The phenomenon was characterized by a lava fountain, the emission of eruptive ash, which fell on the south-east side of Etna, roars heard at a great distance and a lava flow that expands along the western side of the Valle del Bove. The 14th paroxysm of the year on the highest active volcano in Europe was “accompanied” by a particular characteristic: violent roars that made window frames tremble and awakened people who live in the villages on the slopes of Etna.
A phenomenon due to the emission of gas from the summit craters which is part of the traditional activity of the ‘montagnà, of “Idda” (She), as the people of Catania call it. The Ingv-Oe reports that the amplitude of the tremor is clearly decreasing and at average levels. The springs are located south-east of the South-East crater at a depth of about 2,000 meters above sea level and the infrasonic signal does not detect volcanic activity. Due to the cloud cover the observation of the activity in progress is very limited and discontinuous. The new paroxysm of the volcano did not affect the operation of the Vincenzo Bellini international airport in Catania.
