EU: Charles Michel re-elected as president of the European Council

Charles Michel was re-elected President of the European Council for a second term. The heads of state and government have decided to reconfirm the former Belgian premier also in light of the current situation and no one has presented any other candidates. Michel will remain president for two and a half years, from 1 June 2022 to 30 November 2024. Michel was also re-elected president of Eurosummit for the same period.

Since the Lisbon Treaty introduced a stable and no longer rotating mandate, there have been two other presidents: the Belgian Herman Van Rompuy (2009-2014), and the Pole, Donald Tusk (2014-2019), both of the Party popular and both were reconfirmed for a second term.

“I came to congratulate the man who was re-elected without opposition, a thing I dream about from time to time.” This was declared by the American president, Joe Biden, upon his arrival at the European Council, congratulating the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, re-elected a little while ago.
