Deutschlandfunk and the ZEIT Foundation invite you to a panel discussion at the State Museum of Archeology in Chemnitz on June 13, 2023 – sociologist Dr. Ulf Bohmann from Chemnitz University of Technology is on the podium – please register

Democracy is under pressure. Fake news and conspiracy theories are spreading like wildfire on social media. Disproving false claims in turn is like fighting windmills. Targeted disinformation, propaganda and the uncertainty about which information corresponds to the truth are increasingly endangering democracy. The fight against hate speech, fake news and conspiracy myths is therefore also increasingly a fight for free democracy. In Chemnitz, too, politics, the media and society have to deal with fake news again and again – from a shit storm about daycare food to false news from the right-wing spectrum. And here, too, one asks oneself: How can democracy be defended together? How can the city respond to fake news about local events? How are young people in schools made fit for a source-critical approach? How does false news about one’s own city affect coexistence? And what are the challenges for the local media?

On June 13, 2023, starting at 7:00 p.m. (admission: from 6:30 p.m.), a panel discussion as part of Deutschlandfunk’s public project “Denkfabrik” (think tank) will examine these questions in the Chemnitz State Museum of Archeology, Stefan-Heym-Platz 1.

A representative of Chemnitz University of Technology also took a seat on the podium: Dr. Ulf Bohmann, who represents the professorship for sociological theories at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences and one of the three authors of the book, which was published in 2022 “Risk Democracy – Chemnitz between right-wing focus and European Capital of Culture” is. Also represented are Matthias Nowak, press spokesman for the city of Chemnitz, Anne Lena Mösken, deputy editor-in-chief of the “Freie Presse” and Ronald Becker from the educational project “spreu X wheaten”.

The interested public is cordially invited to this event organized by Deutschlandfunk and the ZEIT Foundation. Registration is requested: https://www.zeit-stiftung.de/anmeldung/fake-news-als-gefahr-fuer-die-demokratie

The panel discussion will be recorded by Deutschlandfunk and broadcast as part of the “Zur Discussion” program. The program runs on Wednesdays on Deutschlandfunk from 7:15 p.m. to 7:59 p.m.
